MEDIA MONITORING

Canadian Friends of Ukraine, in partnership with the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine, have carried out several projects to monitor the way in which Ukraine's leading newspapers and television channels cover election campaigns in Ukraine.

The first media monitoring project was carried out prior to the 2004 presidential election campaign. More recently, a second information monitoring project was undertaken on the eve of the 2006 parliamentary election.

In each case, a team of seven researchers in Ukraine spent six months monitoring 44 principal newspapers and 10 national tv channels. The studies identified media bias by measuring the frequency and objectivity of news coverage of the candidates and affiliated political parties.

These unique studies were published in English and Ukrainian and disseminated throughout Ukraine, Europe and North America among government officials, embassies, non-governmental organizations, and institutions such as the OSCE and European Parliament.

A limited number of copies are still available for purchase from Canadian Friends of Ukraine for a nominal fee. To order a copy, call (416) 964-6644.
